The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the scores a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising the match official to review the score on the screen and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves the manager's team into third place in the Premier League, five points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton stay in 14th position and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in role at each end of pitch

After a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, Frank chose the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defence, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation are.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had netted only one league goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor tally on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, even with having space and opportunity to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped threatening crosses into the Spurs box.

What next for both teams?

Everton: Moyes' men travel to Sunderland in the top flight on early November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: The London club travel to St James' Park on late October for their next round League Cup match against Newcastle.
